Great Beginer Plants (www.youtube.com) - June 2013

I have these...
Amazon Swords (Echinodorus bleheri) - one of the hardiest. "Like with most plants, you might buy it and all of the leaves wither off. (this is normal as they adjust) Don't worry Amazon Swords will grow right back.

Mellon Sword

Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) - tie to drift wood - likes a hard trim
(I Have: narrow type)

Other hardy plants...

Jungle Val - grows tall, background plant.

Jungle-Val.jpg
Water Wisteria - perfect for the beginner. Looks good also. May need to add CO2. WaterWisteria.jpg
Dwarf Sagittaria - all along front - great beginer plant (possibly not good in gravel) - Dwarf or Giant type Dwarf-Sagittaria.jpg

Narrow Leaf Anacharis (Egeria najas) - Usually background.

Questions: (1) Do I need to add iron or anything? (2) Which plants stay under 20 inches? (3) How much will each grow (pruning)?
  1. [sortof maybe]: Nubius - drift wood - slow grower
  2. [no] :duck weed - java moss - Caution - once in never goes away

  1. Changing Water (about.com)
...recommendation is to change 10 to 15 % of the water each week. If your tank is heavily stocked, you should bump that up to twenty percent each week. A lightly stocked tank can get by for two weeks, but that should be the maximum length of time between water changes. [I have been changing 17 % every six weeks. Okay for hardy fish. But according to this, I SHOULD DO MORE.]
  2. Changing Activated Carbon (about.com)
Because activated carbon binds with the compounds it removes, it eventually becomes ‘full’ and can no longer remove any other contaminants. Therefore, it must be regularly replaced. Generally replacing it once per month is sufficient. Going for an extended period of time without replacing the carbon will not harm the tank. However, it will eventually lose its ability to remove toxins from the water. [I have been replacing it every six weeks. Okay for hardy fish.]
  3. My Aquarium: Probably 17.45 vertical millimeters per gallon
  4. Water changes: Fill water bottles ahead of time, so that water can get to room temperature.
  5. Bio-Pack: Siphon a little clean water from tank to rinse bio-pack.
  6. Get a bowl to pour into and a plastic cup to always use with the tank.
  7. Algea treatment: Be careful. Too much can harm beneficial bacteria. (someone else's www.myaquariumclub.com)
